i just got a electronic distributor for my ford.its a motorcraft from a late model fe.what do i need to make it work??does the box need to be from a fe engine or can i use one of a 302 or so??do i need to run a box??does it have to be a durasparK?can i use an msd or mallory??sorry for all the questions.i just dont know anything about the duraspark ignition, thamks in advance!
i believe any motorcraft box will work, i've never checked the harness plug in's... i also believe you can hook a mallory or msd box to it- they just replace the motorcraft boxes, as those boxes are essentially a capacitor discharge ignition the same as the aftermarket units..
72ford360, 1976 thru a 1979 harness, of the donor F150-F250 trucks. Get the harnes from the ignition module to the distributor and coil. Get the the harness with the red and white wire (harness) at the ignition module.
Need duraspark module (Motorcraft brand)
Need to check if donor harness will match up to existing coil.
Take you time when removing the harness. Make sure no - one has gotten in there and cut wires before you go in and remove or purchase the harness.
Here a diagram for the original ford duraspark setup - https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...&albumid=18840
im thinking of using msd blaster ignition, there harness adapter and msd blaster coil.it says it will work with magnetic pick ups ,less wiring and not expensive.anyone use something like this???
You can get a Duraspark ignition alot cheaper than MSD. Nothing against MSD, but stock works fine unless you are going high performance. You can get a Duraspark ignition box from any auto store for less than 30 greenbacks.
I converted my 65 352 over to the Dura spark and used all Ford parts.
What an amazing differance. I can give it one full pump on the gas and turn the key and she sits there and idles smooth. It is still a bit cold blooded in the cold, and requires warm up time in cold weather before rolling down the road but even that time has been cut dramaticly.
I just got done building my 418 Fe stroker and run a duraspark system with a 12 to 1 engine. i also run a MSD hot coil but it all works just fine. I actual changed out some parts to limit the mechanical timing to 20 degress and also installed some light weight springs. So I run a all mechanical distributor and plug off the vacuum advance. it works great. Good luck
