Type D transmission?

Type D transmission?
the '87 Ranger I have has a type D transmission in it. Does anyone know how to tell what tranny this is? It's making some bearing noise and I'm trying to decide whether to rebuild or replace. It's a 5 speed manual. thanks in advance. Mark

The very best way to tell EXACTLY what trans you have is to slide under the truck and look at it. On the side there will be a label that has the REAL code for the trans. If it starts out FM### it is a Mitsubishi trans, if it starts out E87A-FA (or something similar) it will be a Mazda trans. The Mazda trans will also have a 1 piece body, while the Mitsubishi will have a removable bell housing.
The generic code of M5OD that some may throw out there is useless. It doesn't tell you what the trans really is.
