Funny,, i changed the 4WABS sensor in the rear axle on saturday and nothing happened. But I did a little test. When i drive with my lights off the speedo works all the time. But when i turn them on,, after awhile the speedo cuts out. If i turn the light off again while driving the speedo will come back on... wonding if its something to do with the cluster itself,, all the bulbs were replaced about 3 months ago and I had no problems.. wonder if something is making the speedo itself to hot and shutting it off.. No sure about all the electical term but I think it might be something on the board of the cluster itself. What you think.?
Well,, I changed the VSS or 4WABS sensor in the rear end and nothing.. But i did figure something out.. The speedo work all the time with the lights off, but then when putting the lights on( Park lights, dash lights) the speedo will quit working... If you turn the lights off the speedo will come back on after about 5 mins.. Almost like something is getting too hot and causing the speedo to somehow short. I changed the dash lights almost 3 months ago and didn't have a problem... any ideas on this one? or a wiring diagram of some sort...
It is using the dash bulbs for a ground, when you turn on the lights you take this ground away.
This would be the logical answer but do not know how it would apply to your truck.
Does the voltmeter and fuel gauge still work when you turn on the lights?
yup,, everything works fine, the tack, fuel gauge, voltage. Just not the speedo. but it takes awhile for the speedo to quit. I never unplugged anything from the cluster when changing the bulbs and made sure everything was still plugged in write.. maybe my best option is to get a cluster from the wreckers and see what happens, rather do that then give Ford a $100 for hook it up to a computer for no reason..
You may not be able to swap in a junkyard cluster. Sometime around your year, they went to a computerized cluster that talks to all the other computers in the truck. If you swap the cluster, the new cluster may not be recognized on the network in the truck.
Well theres nothing digital on mine, just the base model. I don't think mines anything special,, it should work as long as its the same vin type.. "E" i do believe
The VSS has been deleted for 1998. The vehicle speed signal is generated by the rear anti-lock brake sensor and sent to the 4-wheel anti-lock brake system (4WABS) module. The 4WABS module sends the vehicle speed signal via circuit 679 (GY/BK) to all systems which require a vehicle speed signal input.
