Well, I am in the market for a diesel. I have (possibley) found a great deal on a Stroke. Here is the info on it:
1999 XLT F350 4x4, auto, singlecab.
Here are the problems with it(and the reason for the "great deal"):
1. It has a total of 225K on it, with a used engine put in at 75K.
Used engine had 30K on it when installed. Since install, engine has accumulated 150K miles. Total miles on motor at present: approx. 150K.
2. Has had the front axle ASSEMBLEY replaced???
3. Had the ball joints replaced.
4.The steering wheel is WAYY off, and it steers kinda funny...I cant figure out what exactly it is doing, it is just odd. Like it drifts....?
5. Frt Sway Bar bushings are SHOT! You can move the sb by hand like an inch!LOL
6. The shifter lever is looser than hell and it is hard to get into the right gear?
7. It has topical rust on the entire bottom of the rocker panels, even the doors.
I drove it and it ran great, the A/C was cold, the tranny shifted well, all the power stuff works. The price is 6K, but I am really scared to death of P-strokes(previous Cummins owner). What would yall advise? At that price is it worth it?
Thanks!!!
To me it sounds like someone didnt take care of the truck at all. Why did they replace the engine why did it need it. I would be a little affraid to buy that one but not any powerstroke that has been mantained.
Keep on looking for a great deal cause that isn't one. Powerstrokes are great engines but that one was not taken care of. Why was the engine replaced at 30K? Why was the axle assembly replaced? 6k does not seem worth the hassle you are going to have down the road. Keep searching and you will find a great deal.
Yeah, that is kinda what I am thinking. My issue is that I dont have much to spend on a diesel and it is(as you all know) harder than hell to find one for a good price. The history on the original engine was that the #8 injector was leaking and the 'previous owner' drove it for around 10K. Basically, it overfuelled and by the time the 'new owner' installed an injector, the #8 piston was done for from wash. Im in the diesel business, and I would had done the exact same thing vs. REPAIRING it. So the engine, I guess, really Im not too terribly worried about, just all the other crap. Im just torn. I know that the 'previous owner' beat the **** outa the truck, but the 'new owner' has repaired a ton of stuff on it and has had it for 1.5 years.
Knowing the history of the engine I would have replaced it as well, BUT the previous owner did not take care of it and that is why the engine was replaced. Now the current owner has been replacing parts that with proper routine maintenance would not need to be replaced. Keep looking and let someone else take this burden. As much as I hate to wish that burden on anyone else, I am looking out for FTE members. There are great deals out there, be patient and they will find you.
