When I start the truck in the morning and the timing advance is on, one of the cylinders on the pass. side knocks. If I pull the wire off the timing advance solenoid the knock goes away. It really sounds like it is only one cylinder. I think it’s a weak injector firing too early but I'm not sure.
Once the truck warms up the knock goes completely away.
Any ideas? or am I on the right track?
The timing sounds right, and I think you may be on the right track as far as one injector goes. How long since your injectors were out and tested? Ford recommends every 60K. They are relatively cheap to just replace with new or remanufactured- lots available on line, If budget is tight, just have them all tested. Mine needed to be replaced due to poor "pop" quality and dripping, they were original with about 150K miles when I changed them out, wish I had done it earlier! LOL
The whole engine injectors included has about 10K miles on it. It is a Jasper drop in engine, so I was a little surprised when this problem popped up. I guess it's just my luck that 2 months after the warranty on the fuel system ends I need replacement parts.
Do you think I should take all 8 injectors and have them pop tested?
That would be a wise choice........ Did you give Jasper a chance to help you out.... you must have had problems for a while before the warranty ran out while diagnosing.
I have only had the knocking for about a week, prior to that not a single problem. Once the truck is warmed up at idle it runs a little rougher but barely noticeable, other than that I don’t notice anything different. I will call Jasper and see what they can do.
I say we sue the EPA for making it manditory to use ULSD lol. Like I said above, my truck ran fine till I put the ULSD in the tank, now it wont run at all. It's probably just a coincidence but you never know! haha
bassproguy07 I live near a small town called Meridian, it's about 75 miles North of Waco. I agree with your comment about suing the EPA.
I called Jasper, they said to take it to an authorized installer and see what he thinks about it and we will go from there. So I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
well i just have to say something. now i have replaced all injectors well in short the whole fuel system and the tank, and set the timing, the other day i noticed a ticking knock sound was back, and it had me puzzled well i decide to do a test. i had not been adding and additive to my fuel since i changed the injectors 3 weeks ago. well i put lucas additive to the tanks and wehn i got fuel i have noticed they have all went to the ulsd 15 ppm. well after 50 miles of driving the sound was gone. so i figure the ULSD is so dry in lub that that the fuel system will lose it's lub and start the knocking tick sounds. so the only thing i can think of is to add lucas to every tank to save the engine. oriellys has it by the gallon 23.99.
Gr8ride, There is a product called Hot Shot's Secret that was made to fix the problem you are talking about. 80% of the time the injectors are only sticking the other 20% of the time they actually need replaced. It can be found at www.lubricationspecialties.com. It cost about $50 including freight but it has a guarantee. If it doesn't work simply call the company and they will refund the entire amount back to your credit card.
I finally got enough free time to use the computer again.
I took the truck to a mechanic and let him listen to it. He said 100% with out a doubt it's an injector. He told me to run some sea foam through it a couple of times and that should clear it up.
Here’s the thing, I have always used power services additive every fill up and I double it up like the instructions suggest to do so it boosts the cetane by 6 numbers instead of 3. So is the power services additive not very good or what?
Chris Gabe Lube, I read the description of the hotshot additive, and from what I got out of it you add it to the oil which would be ok if I had injectors powered by the engine oil like a powerstroke. This is a pre powerstroke and the injectors don't get anywhere near oil. With all that being said did I completely miss something? Wouldn’t be a first.
Get your injectors bench tested, or you can take your filter off and fill it with straight diesel kleen it should clear up that stuff. You can also test your injectors by starting our truck and 1 by 1 loosening the injector lines on each injector, if the engine dies or starts running worse then the injector is good. If there is a bad injector, one of the ones you loosen won't make a difference in how the truck is running already and that is usually the bad injector. You can then pull it out and have it bench tested. Meridian, Thats up near stephenville aint it....I think I've seen a sign or two when I go up there to Tarlton State for FFA contests. Its nice up there, isn't so flat like it is down here.
I did the injector cancellation test, the results follow.
# 7 the sound almost goes away
# 5 doesn’t really make a difference
# 3 doesn’t really make a difference
# 1 makes the sound worse
I didn't test the driver side bank because the sound is clearly coming from the passenger side.
So from the above which injector do you think it is? Or is it a combination of injectors?
By running the truck with this problem is there any chance of damage?
bassproguy07, your right Meridian is near Stephenville. I go up there sometimes to buy and sell cows.
