Own an '88 Bronco XLT 5.8L with 133K ... runs good and doesn't require adding oil between changes at around 2K. Problem is the small crankcase breather [paper fiber] filter, located below the primary air filter becomes saturated with engine oil after about 1,500 miles. Have taken off both valve covers and cleaned out gunk accumulations ... also made sure oil returns holes were clear. Still have problem, but to a lesser degree. Does anyone know what causes this problem and ways to correct it ... thanks, John
When mine did that it was blowby from worn rings creating excessive crancase pressure. I could clean it out, run it around for a few hundred miles and it would be saturated again.
I suggest a compression check. How many miles on this engine?
Make sure your pcv valve is working and sucking air like it should. After this, the previous poster is probably right. But if you don't worry about stuff like this, the engine will probably keep running a long time. We had another post in another forum where we were talking about how bad our engines got, and they still ran ok. That's when I mentioned the blowby in one of my cars was so bad, I took the hose off the aircleaner and hooked an old length of heater hose to it and ran it down underneath the truck to get rid of the oil smoke.
