My 1999 F-250 7.3l diesel, 4x4 is engaging on its own while i'm driving and not disengaging. the 4x4 light does not even come on. seems to also happen if I driv over a rough patch on road. has anyone experienced this problem and how do you fix.
I doubt the electric transfercase is actually shifting to 4x4h.(unless you have a short in the circuit/
What your feeling is the front hubs are going bad or the small needle bearings that support the front axle shaft are toast and starting to grab the axle shaft while spinning.
I would get under the truck and try to turn your front axle shafts by hand they should turn freely,if not its hubs or needle bearings.
The inside of the hub has a tiny thin piece of bent metal that locks into a groove in a plactic ring that is suppost to hold back a BIG spring and prevet the 4x4 hub gear engaging, its a stupid design. Over many years of operation, the metal cuts right through the plastic groove and there is no tension left to hold back the spring and the hub is forced into its default 'resting' position which is '4x4 locked in'
You can turn the hubs to locked and back to auto again which will reset the spring, but it will drop back into locked with the first bump in the road.
Not way to fix it and no component parts available from Ford. Just spend $400 on a new hub to replace a .50c plastic part.
By the way, the 4x4 dash light is an indication of the transfer case position ONLY, it has no connection to the status of the hubs.
