Here we go:
1999 F350SD V10 Lariet Crew 4x4 124,000 miles.
Started it up after sitting all night.
1) ABS light stayed on (a first for this error).
2) All upshifts are hard. RPM's are high before shifts 3000+.
3) Does not seem to down shift when slowing down. Tranny "seems" to be slipping, not sure.
4) Speedometer drops to zero while truck is moving and transmission is engaged to the rear wheels. (note: RPM's are consistant with normal operations)
5) Accelerate and speedometer "dances" and comes up to speed and settles in to correct speed.
I disconnected battery for several hours. (did not correct anything). Tranny fluid level is fine, no burning smell.
6) During test drive "Service Engine Soon" light came on.
That SES light will say it all. Can you get it scanned somewhere close?
My guess would be a bad VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). There is plenty of info about changing it, pricing it, buying it etc. etc. in this forum and the Super Duty forum.
It is located on top of the rear diff and can be removed with a 10mm socket. You might even try cleaning it off and inspecting the wires for cracks or breaks first.
Thanks folks!! Sorry I didn't introduce myself yet. Busy day at work, but wanted to get my question off to the Great Mechanics on the WEB. When I get a few minutes I will formally introduce myself. I will get'r'scanned. I just wanted ease my mind a little and hope for an electrical problem, not a tranny issue. Thanks Again - Dave
The Vehicle Speed signal is taken off a tone ring attached to the side of the rear differential ring gear as a train of pulses by a magnetic switch.... this signal goes to the ABS computer FIRST where it is distributed to the PCM and finally to the dash cluster
The signal effects ABS, Ignition, Emissions, trany, speedo (obviously) fuel calculations, stereo volume control (some models)
The sensor is a magnetic pick up that can fail two ways... broken cracked connector and wires or crud on the pick up.... if the wires and connector are good then usually a cleaning of the crud will put it back in service... but then you gotta ask your self WHY is my diff full of CRUD!
If the sensor is really farkled up it is a relatively cheap replacement part
What a wonderful Pit Crew I have found!! You were 100% correct. Pulled it out bought a new one from auto parts for $11.99 + tax. Slapped it in, cleared the ABS light, drives better than it ever has . Got back home disconnected battery to clear "service" light. We're back in business, and the wifie thinks I am a Hero. Thanks Folks!! -Dave
