Dont quote me on it but I believe it was a 390. Yes a FE. Man I love those motors!
i'll qoute ya you are correct sir
The scene had Bullitt in a dark "Highland Green" 1968Ford Mustang G.T.390 Fastback chasing two hit-men in a "Tuxedo Black" 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum. (In honor of the Mustang in the film, the Ford Motor Company produced a limited edition 2001 Ford Mustang GT "Bullitt Mustang," which took styling cues from the '68 movie car and even mimicked its exhaust note).
and i didnt think the bullitts of '01 sounded "that" good
So, I just started to get my truck together. For now, I wanted a nice mellow deep sound and didn't want to go duals just yet. Still trying to figure what motor to put in mine. Prob a built 390 4V with built tranny with OD. I have a 360 2V with 2.5 single exhaust & 27inch Glass pack exiting out in front of the right rear wheel / chrome tip. It sounds good an deep and was cheap. Under $100 with lifetime warantee. Like I'll need that. Lol !!!! You can mount the glass pack fins forward or fins backwards. So, I mounted mine fins forward gave me the sound I wanted without any popping sounds.
Very happy with the deep yet mellow sound. Not, loud ... just grumbles going down the road. Not tinny .... Not distrubing or droning..... just nice and mellow.
I'm very happy. My Firebird with a hooker aero is the only thing I have heard that I like better actually.

That is what I want my truck to sound like. What kind of muffler would make it sound like that? Thanks guys!
dunno for sure but the cars used for the movie were on loan from ford and heavily modified for the chase scene engine, susp. and brakes the mopar was stock 440 cept the susp.
I just had my exhaust worked on my '74 long bed Explorer. I went with FloTech headers, 2 1/4" duals and 3 chamber Flowmasters exiting behind each rear wheel. I did try the cherry bombs, but they had a "tinny" sound (IMO). For my long wheel base, I think my set up worked best for me.
One thing I would suggest to everyone else is to ask around to people you know or meet at car / truck shows and find out who did THEIR exhaust. Thats how I found my shop 8+ years ago.. They do awesome work, very reasonable prices, and they stand behind their work. That is what you want.
I'm running Flowmasters (2 1/2") that have turndowns about a foot in front of the rear axle, not a sound for everyone. They set off car alarms when cruising through town and have a resonance at certain speeds. Certainly keeps me entertained
Thanks, she's coming along.... Just finished off spraying new bedliner. I also added in/out carpet to the bed. Took some extra in/out carpet and lined the engine compartment shelves with it. You know the ones that that outline the engine compartment. I'll take a picture or two tomorrow and post them. Looks kind of cool.
Also added Low tone horn today as well. Nice and loud like semi now.... Lol !!!
