Mil1ion, that size pipe is what is used (or at least use to be) on Volkswagens of the 60's and 70's. I think that 2" up to 3" would be the right range.
That's still pretty small. My truck came from the factory with exhaust bigger than that.
Yes, but your truck came with single exhaust.Likely 2 and a quarter or at best 2 and a half inch i.d. pipe.If you go with Mil1ion's suggestion it would equal out to a 3 and a half inch single pipe.If you used my suggestion it would equal 4 inch. As Mil1ion stated if the pipe is too large it starts to sound tinny.
To answer the title question...
No.
I only run one. ;)
A Thrush 45" long 2+1/2".
I was sure enough surprised when i opened the box and the muffler came with Thrush decals.
Thought they were long gone. :)
But the point is, the core pipe is 2+1/2" -all the way through- with cleanly made holes in it. Over 30 years, I've looked down inside a-lot of straight-through mufflers and at a hot-rod shop about 2 years ago I happed to finally find one worth buying!
They didn't have the long one in stock but it turned out to be made the same, just longer. :)
I've run cherry bombs on several motor because theyre cheap and can sound pretty bad a$$ if you do it right. Ive used em on a 302,390,460 and they all sounded pretty cool. On a 302 I'd recommend 2.25 or 2.5 in and i wouldnt run much pipe behind them that can make em sound crappy, i like turn downs anyway, i like the 18 in ones the best but have also used the 24's
and if u dont have any mods the bigger the pipe the less backpressure, the less backpressure the less low end torque, and these engines u need smaller exhuast to build torque unless u have big cam, heads, intake carb, and so on
Everyone i guess can have there opinion i have many different rigs many motors and changed the exhaust on all of them on any v8 i would never go less than 2.5 in even a small 302, thats why every mustang and camaro exhaust you can buy is 2.5 in or better. They run great and dont suffer at all with that size of pipe. A 351 with bombs 2.5 in as well. had a 71 with a 302 in it as well that had tiny little pipes on it must have been less than 2in and it was choked, put a 2.5 in Flowmasters on it and it ran like it should have in the first place. my 418 has had 2.5 in glasspacks and switched to 3 in Flows and is also way better. You will not kill low end torque on a small block by running 2.25 or 2.5 in pipes

I run 2 3/4" single exhaust with a 28" Thrush glasspack (400, no mods), exits in front of the right rear wheel. Cheap, nice mellow sound. You can hear it if I really get after it, but not enough to attract attention from Johnny Law. Can't say if it helped performance any as the P.O. didn't have a muffler on it. Now that was loud... Didn't hurt the performance any, though.
