I have a 1928 Model A with a '70s 460 Engine. I've been doing some repairs on the car, and currently working to fix a ticking sound that the engine is making.
I know that it is on the Drivers side, and is coming from the Valve Cover/Rocker arm area. My first thought was that it might be the lifters. When I removed the Valve Cover on this side, it is clear that most of the rocker arms are seated well against the rods, but one or two have some play (or gap).
Before I go replace lifters, are there any other ideas of what this might be ? Also, is there a way to visibly determine if a lifter is bad?
Yeah, sounds like lifters ticking. The 385 area will help you narrow it down. In the mean time, Lucas oil treatment will stop that in the short run. (not a fix, just a band-aid)
Could it be a broken piston skirt? I had one on a BB Chevy long time ago and it made a ticking noise for about 3 years while I had the truck. Guys please dont have a panic attack because someone mentioned the "other" big block on here.
If the noise sounds like it is under the valve cover then it is probably just some worn rockers. I had a 73 460 that had alot of rocker arm noise and a few new rocker arms quieted it down completely. You can also convert them to be adjustable and solve the problem.
