I average between 9-10mpg, with 70% city driving with 285s out of my V10 Supercab w/ 4.30's... the most I've seen is 12mpg driving 95% highway on a long trip... lol, my ranger would do 12 city/14 highway... my super doodie pretty much does 9 city/11 highway, for the most part...
my buddy drives about 7 miles to work everyday so that definately kills it, same reason my mileage sucks and i drive 5 miles to work everyday. short trips are a bitch on MPG.
I have the same problem, a four mile commute and a '97 powerstroke. About four years ago I started cycling to the job. I can't begin to tally up all the money I've saved. Not to mention the wear and tear of starting up the diesel for two 4 mile trips a day.
Just don't get me started on the cost of bike tires and tubes!!!

Then don't you think you shoulda added that tidbit of info in your original post? 7 miles to work is not really the NORM for most SD owners. Your post about your buddy's mileage made it seem as if his gets much worse mileage than you for no apparent reason other than the fact that he has a V10.
Please don't try and tell us that you get 24% better mileage with your V8.
If one drives 5 miles and the other 7 miles to work everyday, then it seems that conditions for comparison are nearly equal. A 24% difference is more than I'd expect but it's very possible between two different trucks. If that's the difference he says that he's seeing between his friend's truck and his own, then I believe him. It could be that his friend is just heavier on the gas.
Ya know...I didn't see the 5 miles to work for him until you just pointed it out. Whoops! I still think a 24% difference is not indicative of the real average difference.

You can add the extra 2 miles to mine because of going to lunch and coming back from lunch.
