I keep a log of my mileage, dates and gallons consumed so I am very confident in my numbers:
1981 F150 2wd, 5.0 SEFI (Mustang GT), Original AOD, 3.70 gears, 255/45/18 tires on all four corners...
Best tank ever 20.5 mpg
Worst tank in recent driving 15.2
50/50 city/Highway 16.8
Mostly highway 18+
The 20+ came when I was traveling for a job every week. 90%+ Freeway, keeping it at 65 mph.

Probably true, but converting to the Fuel Injection was the best thing I ever did for the pickup!
The 20+ wasn't a fluke for I did that trip weekly for 4 months...I don't remember ever having a tank below 19 on that trip. It is a short box, flairside and that helps keep the weight down!

i have a 1983 with 55,000 original miles. it has 302 [i pulled it out and refreshed it.bearings, rings, and seals.]aod,3:55 rear with a/c. I just put true duals on. I average 13.5 city. Mudpond do you think the fuel injection or the gears make the difference for your mileage? By the way mine is carbed.

The SEFI was a huge step up for my pickup. The 302 that was in before it ran as low as 14 and as high as 18 depending on the load.
One of the other big changes came with the gear change. Mine was running 3.25's from the factory and the mileage was poor (12 ish). It ran in the low teens for RPM on the highway (1400 maybe...memory is poor) and was generally a dog off the bottom. The first change was to 3.89's and it helped a ton! l would have kept those gears but a bearing issue ruined the ring gear and a second set of gears (the 3.70s) were purchased as a much better price. I run roughly 1800 on the highway now and it seems to be a sweet spot for the Mustang engine.
