I'm waiting for my new Magnaflow high flow cat w/down pipe that connects to the manifold with flanges to get here so I can do a new exhaust on my 4.9. Any body got any suggestions that would make getting the manifold studs out easier? I've been hosing them down w/PB blaster already. For heat, I've got Mapp gas, no acetalyne. Thanks in advance.
Soaking them far in advance is the best bet. I'm doing mine the weekend of the 14th, and I started soaking them last Tuesday. A spray a day. Hopefully they'll be a lot easier to get out when it comes time.
When it comes down to it...just do your best to get a straight shot at every bolt. Heat the metal around them if you have trouble with them. Do the easy ones first...that way you have a feel for what it takes to get one off, and if they break, it'll be easier to get the rest out.
The PB Blaster truly works wonders, and spraying far in advance helps quite a bit.
When you go to back out a bolt (You say they are studs, but I suspect they are bolts), if it doesn't want to break loose, try tightening to break the adhession.
they also sell some stuff i found at oreillys that is called "freeze off" and it works good. it just gets the metal real cold and shrinks it in a way and breaks off the rust. thats what i read on the can and i got one nut off so far just 3 more to go so i can get a new exhaust system.
That's a new one to me... I've always heated the area around a bolt to expand it and allow more movement, but freezing the bolt is a new one to me, I might have to give that a shot on something.
