Quick Exhaust Manifold Question

I've got broken studs and some leaks around my exhaust manifolds. Nothing to cause a SEL but it's annoying.

SO! I bought some studs and have a set of gaskets on order...

I'm wondering, can I get by with just removing the old studs and keeping the old gaskets in place? I'm trying to get by on the cheap (tsk, tsk, I know) and it would be a lot easier to just replace the studs one at a time and not have to remove everything and shave the manifolds and all that.

Thoughts?

I was going to do it right and get some headers, but I've been replacing/fixing a lot of other things on my Ex lately and just don't have the money right now.

The easiest way to get your currently broken and soon to be broken studs out will be to have the manifolds off the heads so yes, I would get new gaskets. Plus with the leaks from the broken studs blowing out your old gaskets are most likely shot to a degree. What method are you planning to use to remove to broken studs?

Thanks! That's kind of what I was figuring.

As for removing the old studs...

After making this thread yesterday, I worked on removing a COP bolt that broke off in the intake earlier this week. I boogered that up so bad I probably will need to replace the intake before too long.

So, that was a good lesson. I'll just take it somewhere and let someone who knows what they're doing mess with it, lol.

Maybe OP can go on vacation during this time.
Maybe he can rent a sports car while someone else deals with it.

Well I've taken it to two different shops. One said he wouldn't touch it unless he could pull the motor. The other said he would have to pull the heads.

The guy that said he'd pull the heads quoted me 22 hrs in labor just for the driver side head removal.

Horee sheet.

My local Ford dealer/tech quoted me 8 hrs total to put in the Banks headers. Now I just need some money!

8 hours to put it in, sure. I'll bet it'll be a lot more than that to get the old manifolds off, though.

I'm getting discouraged.

Those stupid studs are pencil thin, too. What was Ford thinking?

Nope 8 hrs for the total price remove and replace... but like we3zs said "wheres the fun in that" I will probably save the $960 in labor cost and still do it myself.

Having run a shop for a number of years, this is going by book time. This does not allow for broken stud time or oh **** we broke that time. That is the way all estimates work. You'll no doubt get the phone call for additional labor time if you take it in.

I would be interested to know what they would charge for the studs, as they have all the TSB supplies, tools and procedures.

Ford dealer in fort Lauder charged me 8 hours of labor to put in my banks system.
This included removal of my broken studs and the additional 4 he broke heat shields too.
I went to the dealer that day and hung out the whole day, in at 8 and he was done by 4ish... Point taken here is, if your good you can get it done, if your a small shop mechanic without 50 tool boxes at your disposal it will take longer.

This is encouraging, actually. I'll just save my money and let Ford do it then.
