okay, i just bought a 460, it was a running engine when removed about a year or so ago....so i have been informed. also, as far as i know it hasnt been on its own outside since its been removed. supposedly it is from a 73-79 ford pick up, and judging from the valve covers this is a good assumption. however, i am at a bit of a loss as this engine doesnt have a flywheel for some reason. and i am not 100% sure if it is a truck 460. there is also something confusing me, see on the valve cover it says C8AE-E (i think there is an "E" on the end) but on the heads it says C9VE-E and i forgot to get the block number when i was in the garage. so what does this mean?
as far as the flywheel goes, i found one a guy is willing to just up and give me...429, NP435 4 spd and everything in between. however this setup HAS been outside for nearly a decade with no hood or even a carb on it (would this engine be worth saving?). what i am really wanting to know is, will this flywheel work on my 460 or not. i know some of the later 460's were balanced differently than the older ones and im not sure what i have and/or what counts as "later" and "older". thanks in advance for the help everyone!
1979 was when the balance changed
look above the starter for the casting number- if its d9te then its external balance and wont work, if its any other number then its internal balance and will work just fine. all the 429s were internal balance except the ones out of the hd trucks in the 80s
