I just bought a 86 f150 XL, I6 300 ci automatic. The transmission was overhauled about a year ago according to the seller. My question is how do I tell if its a C6 or an AOD. The shifter has only D,2,1, this should be a C6 right?? Any input will help. Thanks
Joe
check the bolts on the bottom of the tranny i think c6 is the 21 bolt. l shaped pan. go to lmctruck.com in their online magazines for the right truck years and make they have a guide to tell what your truck has based off the vin and how to tell what tranny you have...
Thanks to all for the input, These sites are great!! no better place for information. Anyway, It for sure does not have overdrive, I will get under today and count bolts on the pan. I checked the VIN through LMCtruck and couldnt find anything about trans type. Which part of the VIN would denote trans type? Well gotta figure out why the gas gage dont work today, I hear the floats fill with fuel and keep it on the bottom, but I will check all the wires first, dont want to drop the tanks unless I have to. Thanks again
Joe
The trans code is not in the VIN number, but on the Rating (VIN) Plate. Look on the plate...see where it says trans? Post that code. I looked at your question last night. Only two possible trans' were used on your vehicle: C6 or an AOD.
The pan on a C6 has 17 bolts, as previously posted above.

Well, its a C6, 17 bolts on the pan. Took it for a test drive today and the tranny is in good shape. There are some other issues I will search for before I post a new thread. Well thanks again for the info.

While cleaning out my shop yesterday I came across the transmision that I had taken out of my 86 PU before parting it out, due to a broken 300-6. This thread has lead me to believe that I have a C6. I am fixin to sell this tranny as it should be in great shape. (I paid $900 to have it rebuilt and used for only a few thousand miles.)
In searching Craigslists I see references made to the C6 being used in big blocks as well as the 300-6's . Same tranny? and what's the C4 about?
The C6's were used on all types of engines, but your particular tranny was bolted to a 300 6 cyl. So your tranny will bolt up to a 300 6 cyl, and a 302 and 351w v8. It will not bolt up to a 351m/400 or 460.
The c4 is a smaller version regular 3 speed automatic. Good tranny, just not as heavy duty as a c6.
