I was just wondering how common it is to find an 1986 F250 4x4 with both factory engine oil & Automatic trans cooler. Mine is equipped that way. This truck is an XL model with highback bench seat, tilt, cruise, A/C, AM/FM/Cassete 2 tone paint, dual tanks, 460, C-6, 3:55 gears. You would of thought they would of bought an XLT. Anyway I'd like to hear how common this option package was in 1986 or earlier.
It's hard to believe but all that stuff, and more, were options even on the XLT, at least in '83. I got more outside aluminum trim, woodgrain on the dash and doors, carpeting, an upscale cloth and vinyl interior with the XLT badges....still had to order full wheel covers, light groups, you name it.
my 350 is equiped the same way as yours and I have wondered the same thing myself. I always thought I guess the only diffrence is the outside trim package.
My XL had rubber floor mats. maybe a few other less trim than XLT. It even has chrome an hard rubber trim dividing the two tone paint. Why someone ordered it this way kind of surprises me. Were the aux engine oil & aux trans coolers options or std with a 460, C-6?
Not sure but I think the extra transmission cooler is standard on all 460's with automatics. I'm pretty sure the oil cooler was part of the HD tow package option (at least I heard that somewhere but I can't verify it).
I just took the factory oil cooler and trans cooler off an 1986 f-250, 460 auto with air and maybe the tow package. It had nothing else.
Basic work truck. It is now on my F-350, 460 4x4.
So that explains the deeper trans pan on my C-6. Tow package. Now that we are talking towing and trannys, My C-6 when you put it in second gear. It is locked in second. Even if you stop it takes off in second. Is this do to someone adding a trans kit or is this also stock? I worked on many C-6s in the day I don't remember them doing that. In second they would shift back to first.
Just wondering, did your tow package come with the "Supercool Option" supposedly containing the radiator with the 4-row core and the heavy duty fan clutch? Those items may only have come with air conditioning, though.
ya i got an 84' with the paint and chrome your talking about i don't have a towing package or oil cooler just has the standard tranny cooler and thats all. no air either.

As I understand from a friend of mine that is a partsman for a Ford dealership, and drives the older stuff like me, that in 1986 Ford went to a plastic & aluminum radiators with the gas engines. He informs me that they didn't offer any radiator option that year. There have been some that have disagreed with me on this. If a Ford parts guy that has been in parts for over 25 years doesn't know then I don't know. I wanted to go to the earlier all metal radiator, but finding the proper mount backets is very difficult. They are not offered by Ford for any of the 80s models prior to 86.
Seems like I remember reading a post in this forum (or somewhere) about getting the entire radiator mounting system from any '80 through '85 with a 351 or 460 to convert back to the copper/brass radiator. Not likely very expensive at a u-pull yard or even off a neighborhood junker for sale.

I brought this up one time but I don't remember anyone mentioning a kit. My problem is I live in an area that only has 1 wrecking yard. Not to mention I'm in Ford country USA. With a fair amount of 80s Ford trucks. When the yard gets a 80s Ford truck it is like a feeding frenzy. Like when you see pictures on TV where they put some fresh blood in an area with sharks then they throw in some meat. Well, that is what it is like when a fresh 80s Ford hits the yard. With in days the owner of the yard is picking up a frame and any bad trim etc. Sometimes even the frame is taken. If you happen to run across any further info on a kit and where to get it would you kindly PM me. Thanks Craig
HI all, I believe I have an extra set of upper rad. mounts. I though I lost mine, so I went to my local yard and found one set. As things go, I no sooner cleaned and installed them, my origional set showed up. As to the lowers, I believe there is just a pair of rubber mounts.

That's the way they designed the c4 auto trannies too. They say by starting out in 2nd, it lowers the torque available from the engine, which helps in trying to take off in ice and snow without spinning.
