i need a Tranny (c6) for my 78 4x4 crewcab, the one in it now slips horribly.
I would like to be able to rebuild a c6 this winter and be able to swap them
come spring time. Can i pull a C6 from a bronco? Or how about a 2wd version?
Joe
A c6 from a bronco would work if it's for the same engine series. You may have to swap out the transfer cases depending on what year the donor trannie comes from.
There are 2 different tail shaft lengths as far as the 4x4's go. Just make sure you have the right one. As for car c6's, anyone will work. Just make sure it has the bolt holes for the neutral/reverse switch, some cases don't have them. you'll also have to put the right length 4x4 tail shaft in it when you rebuild it. The car tail shafts won't work.
Have you attempted to adjust out some of the slipping that you are experiencing? To be honest with you, rebuilding one takes about two days, less if you have all the parts and a warm place to work...
If you have everything ready to go you can take the tailshaft out of your old tranny and swap it into the new tranny. This is a couple hour project that's not terribly difficult to do but you will have to disassemble the new tranny to make it happen. I had to do this on my truck last summer as the tailshaft on the new tranny was too short.

adjusting the bands?? Might be the trick? Or is there more
That was my thought... Loosen the hold down nut, turn in the treaded center screw a 1/2 turn (at a time), lock down the nut and take her for a spin. You may also look at the vacuum lines to your modulator (back of tranny, lower passenger side) to see that the lines are toast and you're loosing vacuum.
