Can you all help me out on this? I'm having trouble with paint starting to chip areound the clearance lights. I've never really heard of this being a problem before. But I just recently noticed that it is starting to rust around the farthest passenger side clearance light. I have had a tiny water leak that trickles down the windshield on the drivers side during very heavy rainfalls. I've been meaning to take them off and check the condition of the roof. However, only 1 screw holds on the lens cover. The base of the clearance light is either glued on or it is screwed in from inside the headliner. What's the easiest way to get them off? I don't want to pry to find out if they are glued on only to break it. Also, is this a common problem and if so, what is the best way to stop the rust and do a quick fix on it. I plan to have the whole roof repaired and painted in the near future, but for now I don't want the rust to get out of hand and water to start and pond up on the inside. I don't get why I have this problem. I do not live in the rust belt. I take very good care of it, and it is only 5 years old. The paint is still in excellent condition. The truck is a 2002 F250 if that means anything. Thank you in advance!!!
DIY, get some OSPHO and silicon caulk. YOu shouldnt have to spend the money to replace the whole roof. Take the lights out and clear any other place with rust seeping in. Treat it 2x with OSPHO just to be safe. Once it cures, fill any holes and gaps with the silicon. You can smooth and paint once that cures. I have done this a lot of time and have never had any problems.
The lights are fastened by studs in the base assemblies going down through the roof and held by nuts on the inside of the roof, behind the headliner. To get them loose, ya' gotta' pull down at least a little of the front of the headliner.
