Just curious about the behaviour of my V10 under load. First it is a 2001 with a 3.73 rear end with which I tow an 8500lbs fifthwheel with OD off in hilly areas. While towing my RV up reasonably steep grades such as grades on interstates in the Appalachian region I find that when my truck downshift's into second gear pushing my RPM's up to roughly 3500-4000 rpm as it should when climbing these grades my engine is suffering from pre-ignition or pinging badly. Have other people also noted this behaviour. I do not notice any pinging under other condition's whatsoever. Is it simply needing higher octane fuel under these condition's
The under load ping is pretty comon. First have you changed your fuel filter? Second have you changed your air filter? Third try getting electrical contact cleaner and spray off the MAF sensor in the intake housing. Dont touch the MAF and look for a cleaner that wont leave residue. If it still pings after all that make sure you dont have an EGR V10 and try some higher octane fuel. Hope that helps.
All of the above ,along with chking your fuel pump pressure under load while drivingat the fuel rail.
its a 01 the pump sock maybe clogged or the pump is getting weak.
The owner's manual states that a slight "ping" under load is considered normal. So I would worry too much about it unless the pinging is severe.
However, contrary to popular opinion, I've always run higher octane fuel when towing heavy... especially in the Summer. Doing so has always eliminated the pinging. When not towing, I drop back to 87 octane.
I had the same problem towing my 5th when I had 3.73 gears. When I'd add higher octane it wouldn't ping as much but would on the steeps grades. I switched my gears to 4.30's and that has eliminated the ping problem, so far. I agree with change fuel & air filter and clean MAF. Changing gears is a little expensive, but I wanted the 4.30's.

That's interesting. I am also planning on changing to either 4:10's or 4:30's before upgrading to a larger 5ver. Diid you change ratios for incresase towing capacity or for larger tires or both reasons. I have replaced the fuel filter recently and will clean my MAF and air filter next. I was also wondering if my rear end ratio was just putting the V10 outside of it sweet spot and causing it detonate early.
I replaced for towing, increased the TQ going up steep grades over the Sierra's. If you change gears go with the 4.30's they're basically the same cost as the 4.10 and you'll want all of the increase you can get. Got on a scale and weighted in at 17,700 lbs and it towed great that trip. I have the stock 265's and will keep the stock, more or less have the truck for towing not the great gas milage. The milage has gone up to 11-12 mpg and 8-9 towing.
