7.3L PSD MPG question

Hello all,

1997, F250, XLT, Heavy Duty, 7.3L PSD, Crew Cab, Short Bed, is making 12-16 mpg.

Does that seem low to you?

I have already replaced the fuel filter.

Anything I can do to get it going better?

-Thanks

I have an '02 with the same engine and virtually the same truck just a Super Duty. Around town I get about 15.5. Towing 9K I get 11.5 to 12.

I sold my 96 f250 XLT extcab long bed 7.3 auto with 3:55 gears and 226,000 miles I regularly got 17-18 around here 21 to 23 on a trip not towing. I had a 6637 air intake mod , a straight 4" exhaust , a superchips tuner.

I am getting about 18-20, but I also drive 50 miles each way to work and it is all highway. Through town I get about 16.5 to 17.5

my 97 crew cab long box, 4wd auto with 3.55 gear hits only sees 15 with 80% highway driving so far. only had it 4 months so no warm weather driving yet.

my 95 was the same thing but a f-250 extended cab I could hit 17 driving it easy never above 65. I did hit 19.5 once but that was 4 hours of 50-60 mph. your mileage is pretty average.

my 97 F250 ext. cab, long bed, 5spd, with 4.11 gears usually gets between 16 and 17 empty and 14 - 15 towing 7 to 12,000 lbs. this is a combination of highway and back country roads, and I have NAPA 6637 airfilter and 4" straight pipe.

Your mileage seems about right.

The way you drive, and the speed you drive, has more to do with your fuel consumption than many realize. When I lived in Seattle, I averaged 16.5mpg overall, and got nearly 20mpg on the freeway. This is with a lifted F350 with 35" tires. Nobody believed that my mileage was that good, but it was. Now that I'm in San Diego, I can only get 15.0mpg. The difference? The speed of traffic is considerably faster down here. In Seattle, the general flow of traffic was in the 60-65mph range during times of moderate traffic volume. Down here, it's 70-75, but many drive faster. On my truck, getting the rpms over 2000 kills the fuel mileage.

I regularly get 18-20 mpg around town empty.
I don't haul much, but when I pulled a 10 canoe trailer filled to capacity and the bed packed with the gear (and full coolers!) for 10 guys I got 16.5 mpg.
