have a 2000 ranger,3.0l. At 80,000 miles had noise like ballpeen hammer on metal. Was 500 miles away, dealer replaced w/p,($800 ) noise stopped, on way home, 80 miles from dealer, started again. got home,(500 miles ) took to local dealer, found roller lifter hold down broken, lifter kaput, slight scratch on cam lobe. Took chance replaced same,not cam ( $1400 ), 120 miles, noise back, but now seems to come from underneath, around exhaust, torque convertor. Am willing to replace cam & lifters but now wondering if it maybe rod knock. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

No way I'll expend that kind of money, your motor is just breaking in is not acceptable to have major engine problems so early!
$1400 for a cam? Are you doing the work yourself? A stock cam and all new lifters should run you less than $500, unless you're paying labor.
Do you have any reallllly long screwdriver around your garage, or anything else long and solid? Put one end of said item to each valve cover, and the other end to your ear, and listen for the noise. Do your best to isolate it, putting that screwdriver/item wherever you can get it to go. Perhaps you can at least nail it down to one side or the other if it's a valvetrain issue, or to another item if that's the problem. I'm taking a shot in the dark here though, haven't had valvetrain issues with any of my trucks.
To RangerPilot: thanks for the info. Yes, I have tried the scewdriver idea & it definitely sounds more like a rod knock than cam ( more pronounced down toward crank end ). The initial noise, I was told, was maybe idler pulley, then definitely water pump, DRY SEAL, ( pump,pulley,belt(my fault-belt dressing) labor,($95/hr) tax,-$800. Engine quiet for 120 miles, then a tick started. By the time I got home, 507 miles, original noise back. Took to local dealer, pup stethoscope to engine & found noise to be lifter. The tang on the lifter holddown had broken off & lifter had turned flattening the roller. They had to drop the tranny in order to drop oilpan! 15 hrs labor,($68/hr) new lifter holder, lifter, can`t forget tax-$1400. My big mistake was taking a chance that the cam lobe would hold up ( & I wonder now if maybe it did-hence my thoughts toward rodknock) Again, thanks for answering my question.
LOL I'm glad I read that last post. I'm a veterinary technician and when the 5.0L in my Mustang started making noise, I stuck my stethoscope on the RH valve cover and diagnosed a sticky #3 rocker arm. I didn't know real mechanics did that.

aw, I'm sorry, man, but there's no way in hell anyone can part me with my baby Stang. He's a 92 GT hatchback that I've built for drag racing. I've put my heart and soul in to that car.
Plus I already have a Ranger.
What kind of Mustang are you looking for? I'm sure I can help you out. Even (maybe especially) if it's an 07 or new 06.
Or are you just trying to unload the Ranger?

CMPRacing302- knew an engineer from Dearborn, Mi. had a sweet `stang. 4.6l polished, blueprinted, nitrous & fast. Oh, by the way, yeh, just frustrated with the ranger. Hang on to the `stang. If anything, I`d like to have my `69 cnarger r/t back, but, as the poet said, "time waits for no man".
It's funny that everyone has cars back in the day, always really nice cars, but at the time don't see all that great. Later on, makes you wish you had them all again.
