can you weld the spider gears to the carrier on a dropout 3rd member, like the 09inch. this is in a 80' Toyota bought for a $100, and it doesnt drive on the street
thanks. that could be a problem. got it running and drove it down the street, forgot it was in 4HI and threw the front driveshaft off. had to turn around and go back for it...
wow... not cool but yes you can... make sure your bearings are good tho.. and your u-joints on drive shaft.. other wise.. your just gonna end up breaking stuff.. but if its not a road truck who cares right
take it all apart and clean all the oil off it then weld it together then make shure all the slag is off befor you reassemble it. those nasty lil slag bits do wonders to your bearings.personally after im done weldin ill sand blast the welds and throw the whole thing in a parts cleaner before i put it back together
A 4 cyl toy diff is not closed like a 9", and is much easier to weld up properly. You'll want to yank the carrier, remove the ring gear, clean it all up and start burning rod. You want to weld the spiders to each other, not just fill up the gear teeth, and you want to weld the spiders to the case, I like to fill in the corners with weld so that the case and gears are solidly welded together with no gaps. Then nothing is going ANYWHERE.
So long as everything in that diff is in decent shape, you should get years of service out of it welded up, and so long as you keep the squirrel power under the hood, you're safe for 35's for sure, maybe 38's depending on your driving style. A buddy of mine has an 84 that's been welded in both ends with 35's for the last 10 years, and has yet to break anything other than the frame(typical Toy rust...) and he uses that thing like it's a big ATV....
sounds good. i got some bald 37 inch Wrangler MTR's im putting on it, and im usually pretty easy on the skinny pedal. Worse that happens is the truck explodes and its the best $100 i ever spent
