Possible Cat Problems Help.

I have 93 explorer that will not start but turns over have checked everything electrical put a new fuel filter. Not the problem check engine light comes on when We hit 50mph now when it turns over sounds like something is not letting exhaust work make a popping souind when it turns sometimes like gulping sound. When it does start it blows black smoke out then runs but rough. Any advice what this may be would be helpful as this is my daughters school vehicle that I gave her only has 68K miles she cannot afford payments on another vehicle.

Where the CEL was coming on, I would pull codes from the computer. There should be something in CM to indicate a problem the computer saw. The black smoke suggests that the engine is running rich, which often points to a fuel delivery problem. Check the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) for gasoline (gas in vacuum=bad FPR), and check fuel pressure.

I second that, common symptoms of a bad FPR. Make sure you change the oil after you do the FPR, fuel flushing past rings and sucked into intake manifold.

Dont leave it too long as you will carbon up the head and valves.
