Well on top of my bad glow plugs, i have something new. When i was trying to start my truck this morning, i turned it over 4 different times, on the 4th time, it stopped turning over. Now when i try to start my engine, it just clicks as if the starter is contacting my engine but not turning it over, i checked my batteries, their fine. But my starter just keeps making a click sound when i turn over my engine. Any help would be appreciated.
Before you go through all kinds of work MAKE sure the batts are fully charged and have a charge of atleast 12.5 volts in each.
Also check the voltage of the batteries while someone is holding the key on in the start position. If the voltage only drops a little then you have a bad connection or starter solinoid. If the voltage drop like a rock to say 8 volts, I'd suspect bad battery or shorted/bad starter.
Of course check all connections and condition of the cables. They are known for corrosion under the insulation and will cause slow cranks.
To check the solinoid on the passenger side fender, use a screw driver to jump across the 2 big lugs. What you will be doing is making the connection between the batts and the starter so it may crank the engine. If the engine does crank then you more than likely found your problem. Solinoid is available at any parts supplier.
If you been experiencing other probs and been working out your starter with alot of cranking it may have burnt up.
Check that all the battery connections are CLEAN and TIGHT. Check the same for the main ground wire at the engine. Check that the connections at the fender mounted starter relay are tight and check that all the connections at the starter itself are good.
If all good try jumping the two big terminals on the fender mounted starter relay with a wrench. If the engine then cranks, that relay is probably bad.
Well we know the batteries are fine, because when i went to turn it over with a voltmeter on the batteries the voltage didnt even fluctuate. I think its a bad starter, it made this sound before. And to fix it we tightened the positive cable on the starter and it cranked fine. come to think of it, we didnt try the left battery only the right one(passenger side). My relay was replaced back when the starter was making this sound before but it didnt help until we tightened the cable on the starter. I believe my starter is burnt out because i used to hold my starter until my engine cranked(about 45sec-1minute). If the starters burnt out, ill get it replaced with the lifetime warranty i have on it. Is there any way of testing the starter with out taking it out?
Hold your test lead of the meter on the big starter lug and try to start it. Make sure your getting battery voltage there. It sounds like the starter solinoid contacts (on the starter) are burnt inside not allowing them good contact to crank. Most are non-serviceable nowadays. Since you have warranty it looks like you'll be taking it back.
That sucks, cuz its a beast to get that heavy thing outta there, but hey, it happens. I also need to order my glow plugs. I think all 8 are bad on mine, but theres no telling until tomorrow when my buddy has his meter again. Thanks for the help you guys.
the starter solenoid is hugging tight against my starter, its just a little bit different than the one in the pic above
That dont affect nothing about the bolt pattern no matter what on an idi there is 2 on bottom and one on top, the one on top is hard to get you just got to play with it and find out what works best for your starter
Look at the insulation close tot he passenger side battery terminal.
Does the cable look swollen?
Is the insulation discolored, brittle or burnt looking?
Those are signs of internal cable corrosion, and the starter may not be getting any power.
That said, 45 seconds to 1 minute cranking time is 2 or 3 times what a starter can handle.
20 seconds max cranking time with at least 2 minutes cool down time before cranking again.
yeah, everything on the passenger side battery is fine, but today i grabbed my neighbors battery charger and hooked it up to the passenger side battery, its reading at 100%, but when i hooked up the driver side battery its reading 25% when unhooked from the other battery. So right now i have it on slow charge at 10 amps, and ill let it charge. All terminals are clean by the way.
If I undersyand your post right something is weird if your batteries were hooked up yhey should of been close to the same when you unhooked them as they will equalise if the cables are good. Even if you have a bad battery the good one will go down until they equalize. if this makes sense.
i understand what your saying, i just dont get it either man. the right one is fine, but the left dead? I think my alternator aint doin its job sometimes. But i could be wrong
