this is the 3rd time i have taken my truck in for service for the same issue. when turning the key to start the truck, it chokes. It sounds like a diesel and then dies. I turn the key again and it starts.
yesterday, it took about 12 seconds to even turn over. (first time that happened).
any idea what could be going on?<!-- / message -->
you aren't pushing the gas pedal before you turn the key are you? I am sure you probably aren't. I always turn my key to the on position for a second or two until the fuel pump has had time to pressure up. Mine will kind of diesel and die if I don't.

I had that problem on mine and it would run like crap all the time. They found that the cam in the right head was wiped out. They replaced the cam and lifters all gaskets and gave me an extended warranty. I would take it in and have it checked. You shouldnt have to prime the fuel system. You may have a bad pump... they will bleed down causing an extended crank.
Many of the 5.4L 3V engines over the past few years have the injector leaking/sticking problem. I did one today and another guy in the shop had an 06' f-150 with a #2 leaking injector. The IDS wouldn't even perform the injector flow test it would leak down so fast. Are you cranking for 12 seconds before it starts, or is it 12 seconds before it even starts to crank?

Have you tried putting oil in the filter before you install it? Thats what the oil change guys did with my truck and I never had any "sounds" at startup. Just an idea.

I have tried that but I can only get in maybe half full without it running out when I go to put it up in place?? When u get my 6.2 ready maybe it will be different, have u seen one yet by chance and don't try to trick me??????????? L8R
Yes,
If you hold down the throlltle pedal to the floor it will prevent the truck from starting. I carnk mine until the oil light goes out. I will crank for like 3 sec. and then stop and then for 3 sec... so on until the light goes out. I do put about 1/2 qt. in it before I put the filter on too.
I have noticed a similar thing the last few weeks. When I first turn the key in the times it doesn't start my mileage thing (I have a Lariat with the display) says low oil pressure for a second. Then today while leaving for lunch it did the same thing but it took three or four tries to get it to start and the low oil pressure was on till it started. After it start gauge reads fine and it runs great. 06 w/5.4 and 27,000 miles. Does this sound like the same thing. I guess I should take it into the shop?
