Too lean? How to check?

What is an easy way to check if you are running too lean just put smaller jets in my 400 it runs a 1406 edelbrock i went from .098 main jets to .095 main jets and left the secondaries alone they also run .095. I dont have any popping through the carb or noticeable surging just worried about melting a spark plug or my manifolds getting too hot. Also timing is set to 12 deg. btdc and run a edlebrock performer mainfold and a summit rv cam comparable to a high energy 260h cam. Thanks for any info.

I usually just check the spark plugs. What rods are you using?

I am running rod #1456 or 7347 number stamped on rod itself. This setup acoording to the manual is 1.5 stages lean on both power mode and cruise mode. The reference number is #7. I wanted to do # 8 which uses the #1455 rod but for some reason they forgot to put those rods in, instead I have two sets of #7547 rods.

A lean carb will show up as a flat spot in the power curve. It might show up just off-idle in the cruise mode, or on acceleration in the power mode.

Those Edelbrock carbs tend to be a little lean with the factory jets/rods.

I wouldn't drill. You can't be sure of the finished product.

Larger jets can be purchased from Edelbrock, Summit Racing, Jegs, other on-line suppliers and from your local speed shop.

One step larger can help, but you need some way to measure improvement. Like a 1/4 mile strip.

Yeah I did have a little flat spot in it when I first installed the carb so I swapped out the rods to what I run now. But I am on the quest of squeaking out a little more mpg so I went to the smaller jets, truck seems to run good in all aspects maybe not as much off the line power but its a compromise when you run 36" tires. I was getting around 9-10mpg highway with old setup and I am taking a 4 hour trip at the end of april with current setup if its not too lean for it. I guess I will drive the truck a bit and then check the plugs to see if they are getting too hot. I will also run the truck at night to see if the maifolds get cherry red or not.

The plugs are a good indicator.
