I searched the threads but didn't find quite what Iwas looking for. Can some one tell me the years of tank that would fit on my 1979 fleetside f150? I just spent 2 and a half hours sucking the gas out and removing the tank due to leaks. I discovered two pin- hole leaks in the tank, so it's time for a new one. Which is better, poly tank or metal?
I'm doing the same to my '76 - it had a ton of nasty sediment in the bottom of the tank, so I"m going to buy a poly one from BroncoGraveyard. I'd go with poly - why worry about rust again? There's a few differences on the tanks, if I remember correctly - go on over to there and check out their stuff - it's pretty decently priced as well. I'm replacing the filler tubes and sending unit while I'm in there too - you might want to check on that.
Yeah, this sucks bad huh? Just trying to get the old gas ou and then what to do with it when you do get it out. Yuck comes in second to jobs I don't wanna do on the truck. In first place is pull the tranny! I'll check out that sit, I would like to use our sponsors site but Blue Oval wants $150.00 for one when everyone else wans$ 100.00. I'm having trouble convincing my wife that buying a $100.00 gas tanl is a good move!
could be worse.......I'm trying to convince myself about buying a $510 gas tank for my 77 F250 4x4 (highboy). only one company that I know off makes a rear tank for those trucks- VERY EXPENSIVE.
That's about all I can say.... besides "wow! That's alot!" My wife was suggestinging I find one out of the junkyard, but I feel like I would just be installing more rust and sludge from somebody elses truck.
Just got my plastic tank (plus some other things) in from BroncoGraveyard. Real fast shipping, accurate order, a little skimpy on the package care. Weird thing about the plastic tanks, though - where the sending unit attaches with the lock ring, a metal piece is held in place by screws and tabs in order to provide a metal surface for the new gasket, sender, and lock ring to attach to. Looks kinda ghetto-fab. I'll keep ya'll updated on how the install works.
There are a few things that should hit a home run with the wife and Safety is one of them. Not too much worse than to burn up in a truck, or burn a house down because it was in a garage. Not that many trucks this old get in the garage. I pretty much get my way with gas tanks and brakes, It's the Horsepower increases that I am having trouble with.
I ended up going "ghetto fab" and sanded, patched and painted mine with por 15. Came out pretty good, I used some kind of gas tank patch from Autozone that is black on the outside and grey in the middle, you knead it together and it hardened up good. The most expensive part was the new filler hose, $25.00. I'm sure glad it's done, but I may be doing it again in a few years!

The 183.00 is labor charges if they installed it. Its approximately $100.00 for shipping the tank.

Haaaaaahaaa, I think I should have talked to you quite some time ago. I'm gonna have to use that arsenal next time I justify a project! Come to think of it...the rear brakes on the Supercab are REAL crappy...
i found a great way to drain tanks. get a universal fuel pump and hook it up to the fuel line and pump it into a jug or whatever. if you buy a new pump get one with a warranty, so if you just hook it to a battery and it dies you get a new one. if your cheap, like me, look for in the frame pumps on mid 80's rangers and f series. done this a few times in my old ranger. because ford made 8 gas tanks for it. the one for my truck was obsolete. i used a plastic fuel cell first, they don't work good buried in 2 feet of snow(back when i was up north plowing snow). after numerous tank drains, i found an 85 ranger tank and got it to work. just my 2 cents.
I just replaced mine. 19 gal tank ran about $120 bucks available at most parts stores, the big 3 inch filler hose about $40 is harder to find. Id suggest coating the tank with undercoating or something to deter rust.

Okay... Iknow there's gotta be a "donkey smiley" face I can use somewhere...
bThe whole time I was swallowing gas and spilling it all over, I was standing by a electric fuel pump out of a 85 Honda.Bahh!
