My used oil was black as coal when I changed it for the first time in early January. The new 5w40 synthetic I put in had a very nice light honey color to it. At the same time I put this new oil in, I also installed an OilGuard bypass filter system.

Last weekend, while working on the truck, I checked the oil for the first time since the change (4500 miles ago), and it has a slightly darker and richer color, but it isn't black by any means and you can still see through it fine. Also, the level hasn't dropped at all since the oil change. I can't say whether it is the synthetic oil by its own nature or the bypass filtering system, or the way I drive, or the interior condition of the engine, or some combination of any or all of these things that has prevented the oil from getting black. I'll also be pulling a sample this weekend for my 5K Blackstone analysis to see how the oil is holding up. I want to take ti to 10K miles, but it will depend on the Blackstone results.

I just looked at mine. It's fairly black, but it's 2000 miles old. It does have a brown tint to it though.
