OK, so I bought this 02 F350 diesel and noticed the oil was very black. So I took it in to Ford for service including oil and trans fluid change. Oil is still black. Is that the way diesel motor oil looks? New oil in my 460 Ford is light brown and clear.
Umm, my oil after its changed is the light brown/clear. Its looks like that in the Rotella Bucket too when i pour it in. When i check it after i am done, its sometimes hard to see.
Thanks for the info. I can't believe they forgot to change it so I am going to pick up a qt. of their FoMoCo "diesel" motor oil tomorrow and look at the color.
When you perform a normal oil change in a Powerstroke, you are only changing about 75-80% of the engine's oil capacity. The rest just mixes with the new oil and makes it look black. Don't worry, it's still new.
I guess i did not read your post right, since right after i change the oil i check it before i start it, thus it being clear'er than after its started my bad. The HPOP resivoir holds quite a bit of oil.
Don't go by the color of the new oil. After a 100 miles it's black as coal again.
It's hard drainig out 15 qts. There is still a lot of minor soot in the crankcase. It takes a little getting used to.
Speaking of soot you should of seen the look on my Subaru driving neighbor's
face when I rinsed out my exhaust tip yesterday. I could of sworn she was going to call Greenpeace and repot me to the EPA.
She just moved in, so she'll get used to it. Or the staight pipe comes back out and stays on throught the winter.
I have ran the straight syn ( here we go ) amsoil, and I have never seen my oil black, i have to sometime's angle the dipstick to see the oil level on it. 102,000. miles and still going clean
izzy, how often have you changed the oil, GE bought a used truck.
When I bought mine, it was black too. But right after a change it wasn't. Mine was still light brown after a week's worth of driving to work & back (20 miles round trip). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am under the impression that he checked right after they supposedly changed it. I would think it would look light brown -- unless he drove it a lot longer that I'm thinking...
About 10 miles from the dealership til I checked it. It's not opaque black, but nevertheless, a black tint, not brown or even close to clear like new motor oil.
It does smell the same as the new oil (I got an extra quart). What about synthetic. Is it better?

Something's fishy. I think it should look like new oil longer than that. How many miles on your beast? I've got 64k on mine.
I think syn is better, but this is one of those subjects that is like asking if the Democrats or Republicans are right...
