Intermitant Check Engine Light

As stated, the light comes on about once or twice a week for a period then goes out for a few days. No noticeable regularity to it. Only thing I do notice is a tapping noise from the right side of the engine on occasion. Any ideas?

You need to have codes pulled. If your vehicle is 1996 or newer (OBDII) even though the light went back out, it should still have the code stored.

Have someone pull your codes and post the results here, we'll try to help.

Got a code P1400 and was told by auto zone that it is a dealer only code and no idea what it means. Called the ford dealer and was told that the egr system needed to be checked. It could be the DPFE or a number of other things. Told the cost would be no more than $400.00. I have a 2002 Exp. w/ 4.0 SOHC and 72,000 on it. From searching here, the going thought is to replace the DPFE. Is this still a good plan?

Thanks for those links aquanaut.

I have a 94 with DPFE/EGR codes, so I am very interested in the last link (the test procedure).

One question: If the "wire harness remains plugged into the DPFE sensor for this test," where do you probe with the DVM?

Here is the specific history of these issues. All codes were KOEO (or CM).

Nov 25 06:

332, Insufficient EGR flow detected<O

Replaced manifold-to-DPFE tubing, no more codes<O

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comNov 25 2006</st1:date>:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = " /><st1:date Month="2" Day="2" Year="2007">February 2 2007</st1:date>:

336: Pressure Feedback EGR (PFE) sensor or EGR Pressure Transducer (EPT) - signal voltage higher than expected (exhaust pressure high)

<O</OAND

<O</O337: EGR Valve Position (EVP) sensor, Pressure Feedback EGR (PFE) sensor or EGR Pressure Transducer (EPT) - signal voltage too high

<O</OReplaced DPFE, no more codes

<O</O<st1:date Month="3" Day="12" Year="2006">March 12, 2006</st1:date> (to present):

<O</OCode 327 = EGR, EVP, PFE, or EPT signal voltage too low

I'm off to buy a vaccuum pump so I can check it this weekend. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mike

Well, I have no idea how all those smiles got into my message. Yikes...

Anyway, thanks for the additional picture, very helpful.

My question from above is, how do I connect a voltmeter to a sensor without disconnecting the wiring harness? Do I have to put a hole in the insulation? I would really prefer not to do that (fear of corrosion).

I have used straight pins and/or paperclips to gain a connnection into the connector, whatever works best. If you have to pierce the casing a swipe with silicone will seal any puncture.
