I have a 1999 F150 4X4 w/5.4 and on my way home the engine light came on. It appears to be running fine. When I noticed it the miles were around 65700. Any Info?????????????
My '99 Lariat with the 5.4L did exactly the same thing at around 63,000 miles. Took it to the Ford dealer and discovered that I had a bad Oxygen sensor. It was a little pricey to have replaced, but since I was going to have to pay for the diagnostic if I didn't let them do it, I went along for the ride. The bill for diagnostic and labor to replace the sensor was $137 and the O2 sensor itself was about $90. For what it's worth, it was the passenger side sensor that was bad.
On a 99? Didn't your warranty cover it? or did yuo have the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty? I really hate how stuff starts to go after the warranty is up, on anything you buy, not just cars. It's with TV's, CD players, Toasters, everything, you name it buddy!! I say everyone in America puts their fists down and says "hell no, this stinks like rotten meat!" Lol, well, I doubt that'll happen, so I guess we'll just continue to pay more for things, and have limited warrantees, yada yada....hehe.

THe "check engine light" usually comes on due to a emmission related problem, bad Oxy. sensor, cam position sensor, etc... years back, these items were covered for 5 and 50,000 , but now it's only 3 and 36,000 as per the Feds relaxing standards. The computer will store a code as to what's acting up. It may not bother you again for a while, but may come back on again at a later date. The dealer or someone with the right diag tools has to clear this code out of the comp.
