I ended up trading an old turbo I had lying around for a 9-inch center with a Detriot locker this last weekend... not bad for my $50 turbo
However, it is a 31 spline rear, and it turns out I currently have a 28 spline in my truck. Where is the best place to get 31 spline axles for the older 9 inch with a 5x5.5 bolt pattern? Everything out there seems to be for Broncos. Will those fit?
Full size Broncos through 96 use the 5x5 1/2 pattern. When Ford went to 31 spline on the pickups they had widened the rear axle assembly. There may be a few 72 and earlier 31 splines, but I wouldn't hold my breath while looking for one. IMHO
My '72 has a 31 spline in it and I believe it is a little rare. Moser and some other axle manufacturers will have what you need. Just take them your 28 spline axles for length comparison and let them measure them.
31: C8TZ-4234-B .. Bolt pattern: 5.50 / Length of Shaft-Less Flange: 29 13/16" / End Spline Diameter: 1 11/32" / Diameter of Flange: 7 1/16" .. This 31 splined axle is used with a 9" or 9 3/8" Ring Gear. The 9 3/8" Ring Gear was not available with a 28 splined axle.
From 1968/72, the 31 splined axle was an option on all F100's except one. It was the standard axle on 1968/72 F100 Camper Specials. C/S's used the 9 3/8" Ring gear.
John: NOTE: Ford widened the axles in 1973. 1968/72 28 and 31 splined axles use identical housings.

What are the over-all axle widths of the pre-73 as compared to the post-73? And would the Ford 9" and the semi float DANA 44 or 60 rears be the same width for the same years?
WMS to WMS measurements?
