Question trash block or rebuild???

Im only 23, so exuse me if I ask something that should be a no brainer:

I pulled my 302 out of my 70 f100. When I pulled the oil pan I found two shattered connecting rods... They were still connected to the pistons... just broke at the bottom... The truck was sitting for 2 years and I just cranked it after replacing some upper engine parts.. It ran until it was parked... It looks like everything is still okay just luck that nothing else got hit... should I just replace the connecting rods or start from scratch.. I am eventually getting a bigger engine, but for now I am looking for a cheap way to get it running until I can get money for a 351... piston walls are all nice and smooth and everything seems to be intact... I am just looking for advise from a few pro's.....

My truck is a 1970 but the grill is the 71 style... It came of the line in November.. So when I look at certain engine parts it asks 70 or 71... Does it matter??? I thought the only difference was the grill..

If everthing looks good I would just replace the rods especially if you are just looking to get by.. Kevin

With 2 broken connecting rods and limited experience I'd suggest you have someone with a background in engine work take a look at it.I've seen con rods fail and they usually cause some serious damage. The cylinder walls may be okay but what about the crankshaft and other parts?

I wou8ld check all the crank journals, but if you are planning on replacing the engine anyway, i think you could get by with just new con rods.

You need to figure out why the rods broke. No sence in replacing the rods if you have a crack some place thats going to hydraulic the cylinders and bend rods again.

thanks for all the advice..... the guy I bought my truck from let some kid drive it and he drove it out of oil.. they parked it knocking real bad.. so after two years of sitting I just threw some new rods and gaskets not thinkink it was a big knock and started it...
