I've been reading up on helper springs and air bags. I bought a set of coil helper springs that should be here Friday. Tonight I looked under the bed to see if there would be any obstacles to the installation.
It appears that my 04 Ranger 2wd has a "bump stop" right in the spot where I would install the coil spring. The rubber bump looks like it could be removed, but the opposing piece would have to be replaced with a spacer as it also acts as a spacer under the leaf springs. Take a look at this picture:
The arrows point at the rubber bump and the opposing stop. Has anyone installed coil helper springs or air bags on an 04 2wd and encountered a similar experience? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
If what you bought specifically indicated '04 Ranger, you should'nt have a problem. If the helpers mount where you indicated, then they would supply the necessary hardware. The bump stop would probably be replaced with an upper mount for the coil and the lower part would attach to the extender.
What's the lower stop made out of? Might make a good mounting point if you could properly fab something to hold the spring securely. How big are these springs?
The lower stop is made out of steel. I was thinking the same thing - mount the coil to the stop with some minor fabrication. I still might completely remove the stop and replace it with a spacer.
The helper spring kit I bought is a universal system. I may end up having to replace the stop with a spacer and remove the rubber piece.
Leave it if it fits into the top of the spring , it will help keep the spring in place. The bottom stop needs to be cut off to make room for the spring to fit on the axle. The overload spring will be your bump stop. If you load your Ranger with a nought weight to bottom out the overload spring you have more weight on your Ranger then the axle was design to haul.
