I have access to a couple of rebuilt alternators for cheap that came off of a 2005 ford psd 6.0 liter engine, Will these fit on my 2001 7.3 liter psd. They sure look the same and the conections look the same but the ones off of the 6.0 look a little larger in diameter.
Biggest thing to look at is mounting, if the mount is the same, plug it in. They are not going to hurt anything. Are they a high output, any reason for putting these in, or just looking to keep around for spare? I know you can get some nice rebuilt ones off ebay, but most the time when you need one, you need it now, not in a couple of days.
The only difference i see in the two is the the 6.0 has a different output stud, other than that, they look indentical. I actually would prefer that type of output stud as it then the cable coming off the alternator wouldn't be making a 90deg bend.
So I have a 2001F350 7.3 L I first put on a 6.0 140 amp alternator and it worked but I wanted to make sure I had enough power so I switched over to the 6.4 200 amp alternator they all mount up the same but the only issue you’re going to have with either a 6.0 or 6.4 is your battery light is going to stay on after driving for like two or three minutes but other than that you’re gonna have perfect power and they last heck of a lot longer then the 7.3 I still can’t figure out how to get the light to turn off because the pigtail on the 7.3l has only two wires but the 6.0 and 6.4 have three which is the middle wire I’m sure that’s the only issue you’ll run into
Several year’s ago I had a local alternator shop rebuild a 6.0 which has a larger case than the OEM 7.3 and as mentioned, a larger output than the 7.3s. It had to have an adapter pigtail to mate to my alt cable and I had do grind out a little of the bottom of the aluminum bracket, no big deal. Now at idle it produces 14.3 volts and I have not had any issues with the alt dash light. I have a ‘02 F250.
The local alternator shop gave me this number for the upgraded pigtail between the 7.3 OEM harness and the 130-140a 6.0 3G alternator as
110-14012.
Hope this helps. Any solid alternator shop shop should be able to do the same.
