Check Engine Light On! Confused!?!

My 89 Ford which has been running fine suddenly has gone haywire. I replaced my IAC because I thought it might be going bad. I popped the new one in start it up and boom check engine light is flashing. I ran it around for a bit finally went off. I started it again later and it did the same thing. Is there something I did wrong? Do I need to unplug the battery to clear the computer or something? It's never had this problem before. My wife says it also shudders when you take off from a stop, which it hasn't done before either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Pull the codes!! On an 89 you've got OBD1, its really easy. Have your local auto shop do it, or buy a code reader for ~$30 or jump the connectors. Report the codes back here.

Need to check the codes, go to "fordfuelinjection.com" to get the details on how to do it, it is very simple and will help preventing you from being a random parts changer.

To clear codes you can remove the battery terminal but it is probably better if you pull the jumper you used to initiate the read out, do it at any point after the readout has begun and before it ends, preserves the adaptive run strategy.

Ok I pulled the codes and got code 51, which is ECT sensor signal is greater than the Self-Test maximum of 4.6 volts. I replaced the sensor that screws in at the same time I replaced the IAC because a month ago when I pulled the water pump I cracked the connection with wiring harness. When I checked it before I replaced it the wiring harness was fine but the sensors' plastic had cracked. I did not unhook the battery when I did this. Do you think it is possible that I shorted the sensor? I don't think I did since it was not connected to the wiring harness until it was screwed in. What do you think I should do?

Where did you get those sensors? Was it AUTOZONE? Were they WELLS parts? If so go to NAPA or CARQUEST and pay some money for them. I've had REALLY bad experiences with WELLS products, the ones napa and carquest sell are the SAME as the OEM part. They're not just a cheap knock off based on the same design like the wells part.
