My engine died as I shifted into drive from reverse as I was going to work today. The check engine and the battery light switched on as this happened. When I first started the engine it started fine, and I let it warm up for a few minutes before I headed out. After the engine died it wouldn't restart (which was fun because I was out in the road, blocking both lanes), after quite a bit of cranking the engine finally did start, and it ran fine after that.. I pulled back into my driveway and checked it out, turned if off and on again, shifted from park to drive, and even went on to work and had no problems with it running, which has made me thoroughly stumped.
Also I noticed while I was in transit the check engine light came on again. The defroster was on, so I turned if off, then the engine light went out. Turned back on, and the light came back on. What would cause this to happen, and are the two problems related?
Mine has done that a few times but usually takes about 30 minutes before it finally starts. Mine happened to be a combination of the EEC Power Relay wiring on the driver side wheel well and the Fuel Pump Relay next to the EEC. There are numerous things that can cause your condition though. Fuel pump (in tank and on the driver side rail), TFI Module, coil, distributor, Map sensor and the list goes on and on. Pull your codes as well and if you have not done so, buy a Haynes manual.
Of course, one thing that would help, would be if you told us what year etc...
I had a chevy s10 blazer that did that very same thing. tie final verdict was the map sensor was unplugged(as for the light). on the chevy it is located on the underside of the air intake hose, i dont know quite whereabouts it is on yours, it might bee too old to even have one. as for the dying, well ill have to see what the chevy had wrong with it. this might not help you comming from advice from a chevy owner, but maybe...
That would probably mean that your TPS is set incorrectly and your IAT is dirty. Clean or replace and set TPS per manual instructions. Lucky for you, this is a easy/free fix. Code 21 could be faulty temp sensor. What does your dash gauge display?
