I have an f-350 with a 5.4 triton, I just added a jba exhaust, and I'm very satisfied with the performance upgrade it gave. I was just wondering if the addition of headers would make it at least a bit louder, and if the headers would prohibit me from using a chip tuner?
Headers will not prevent you from adding a programmer tune.... just make it sound a bit deeper, maybe better. IMO the 5.4L can be made to sound the best out of the diesel, 6.8L, 5.4L engines.
it's a single exit exhaust, looks great, too. The sound in the cab is great, but unfortunately it's just a tiny notch louder than stock outside. The reason I asked the question is, I planned on buying a hypertech programmer so I could run regular gasoline, and their website mentions that their tuner does not support headers.
I have run headers on my V10 for a couple years now. I have run in the stock PCM tune and a high performance Superchips tune with no issues at all.
As was stated, the headers will deepen the tone. If you go the stainless route, you will have added pulsating noise due to the thin steel. I got it on mine. It is just the sound of the exhaust gases rushing through the headers.
ahh Hypertech tuners...I had a intake and exhaust on my last truck '99 5.4L F-150 and it pinged in the regular #1 and #2 tunes....I didnt try the premium tune cause that was just not what I wanted to do especially with the gas prices the way they were but Hypertech told me that they only tune a stock vehicle so they couldnt help me cause I had an intake and exhaust......needless to say I just returned the programer and kept it stock. I dont know how Hypertech tuners are with the newer 5.4l but I would go with Superchips tuner before considering Hypertech........the Edge tuner is hot for the F-150's but I am not sure if they have it for the F250 5.4l.
