2002 Sd 250
I've been watching this site since I bought my "02" SD 250 2 weeks ago.It sure seems there are alot of knowageable people here & I'm sure I'll have alot of questions ,since this my first truck ( WHAT A TRUCK !).my last car was a 1998 Honda Civic.I love this truck untill it comes time to feed it,oh well I can live with that.I bought it to tow our 7,500 lb. camper. My first qusetion is did I get a good deal on it ? it's a 2002 5.4 motor 4x4 off road package 36,000 miles, inside & outside are perfict for $17,000.
Second, the front hubs are auto/manual,when would I want the hubs in lock mode .Thanks for your time
Brian
Second, you never really have to lock the hubs. However, a lot of people prefer to lock them in manually if they know they will be leaving the vehicle in 4 wheel drive for an extended period, or working the 4 wheel drive system hard, like trail riding or mudding. If you are just wanting to switch into 4 wheel drive for a short period of time like taking off from a snowy intersection, driving through a wet yard to avoid spinning the tires, stuff like that you can easily leave that to the auto locking hubs. That being said it is usually a good idea to try to lock and unlock the hubs manually a couple times, and switch the system in and out of 4 wheel drive a couple times, about once a month to help keep everything lubed up and in good working order.
I added my F250 6.0 diesel to my inventory to pull our 6500 lb (dry) travel trailer. I pulled it a few times with my 5.4L Expedition and got about 5-6 mpg.
Don't know what gears you have, my expy had 3.73's.
Certainly a good deal you got, but probably not the best choice for the mission you want.

To get an idea on whether you got a good price do this. Go to KBB.com. Thats the Kelly Blue Book site.
Run the numbers on your truck and look at two figures. First, average trade-in...this is the price that a dealer would PROBABLY give for the truck, in other words, what they would be willing to pay for the truck.
Next look at the average retail...this is what the dealer COULD ask for the truck. Your price was hopefully real close to average trade in....meaning that the dealer made a low to no profit on you.
Outside of that, there's lots of other things to throw into the hat.
FYI, I bought my 03 a little over a month ago. I paid 27 for mine and found out later that the dealer made 500 bucks profit on the truck. I had them put new tires on it to seal the deal....there went another 200 at their cost so they wound up making about 300 on my truck.
