slippery transmission

Hello guys,
I want to buy a Ranger with a bad transmission and I would appreciate your input in diagnosing the problem.
About the truck: 1987 Ford Ranger XLT 4X2, 191,000 miles, 2.9 liter V-6, Automatic Transmission.
The owner says: "The transmission will go into gear but slips badly and the truck will have to be trailered or towed"
The question is: based on this simple description can you guys tell how bad is the problem?
The owner also says that he’ll give me the modulator valve and a new filter…
I have no problem in taking the transmission apart and replacing the defective parts, as long as I can find/buy those parts. Can anybody recommend an online transmission parts shop (or local for southern CT)?
Many thanks guys!

Well.....It's kinda like guessing.
Could be one clutch pack burned up or a bunch a stuff messed up.
If you knew for sure that it was parked after it first acted up then probably not too bad but if someone kept driving it and abusing it then it could be bad.

I would just plan on buying a complete kit and hope thet it doesn't need too many hard parts. You should be able to find most anything you need new or used.

Thanks for replying. My guess is that the truck was driven until it couldn't move.
I'm thinking to look for an used transmission to put in. Maybe it will be a little cheaper. Can you please recommend other Ford vehicles that will have the same transmission (that will fit in without any modification/adaptation)?

OK. I bought the truck and drive it home. It seems that the problem (or at least one of the problems) was that there was not enough fluid in the transmission. After I put 2 quarts the transmission worked (almost) ok.
Now there are two thinks that bother me:
1. When the transmission shifts from 2 to 3 there is a short delay in engagement followed by a shock. Same in reverse. I hope that by changing the o-rings of the servos the problem will be solved.
2. it seems that the tranny leaks a lot of fluid. The most obvious leak is at the end of it, where the shaft goes out. There is this brown-ish piece that is broken...as you can see in the pictures

What's the name of that piece? What name should I use when I order it?
Can I just remove the shaft by disconect it from the transfer case and pull it out of the transmision?
Thanks!

Yes the shaft should just slip out as mine did if they're anything alike. From what I remember tho, I've got a rubber boot that covers where the shaft enters the tranny. Granted my truck is a 3.0 (diff engine family), a manual, and newer year so take it as you will. As far as names goes, your guess is as good as mine.

Is it plastic? Looks like what's left of the plastic seal extension.

I think it is plastic. I went to an auto parts shop and they don't have it. It seems that I have to go to a ford dealer for it (hopefully they can get it).
Today I found another major leak. The rubber hoses that connect the metal lines to the fluid cooler were leaking a lot at the clamps. I just tighten the clamps, but I'm a little concerned about the strength of these hoses, because they feel quite soft. I'll keep an eye on them to see if they will leak any further.
