I have a 1995 F-150 4x4 with 5.0L engine and a bad automatic 4R70W transmission. A seller on E-Bay is advertising several new OEM 4R70W transmissions for 1998 Explorers or Mountaineers. Can anyone tell me if I could use one of those new transmissions in my 1995 F-150?

What diagnosis have you done to conclude the transmission is bad? Codes of any type for the engine, trans, or speed sensor will have a dramatic effect on transmission operation so do yourself a favor and check all this out or you could be about to waste a lot of money replacing a transmission that isn't broken.
Would it work if he had one that bolts up to a v8? Not sure what the differences in the electrical would be.
Electrical differences are...
'98+ has a one-piece circuit assembly (like a plastic tray with busbars) where your 95 has actual wires inside the pan. Not an issue for your swap. Use the new circuit assembly instead of the wires.
'98+ uses a different EPC solenoid and range sensor... easy fix, swap your old ones over from the '95.
And the newer transmission will also use a different pin arrangement in the main electrical connector... easy fix, just re-pin your harness connector. There are 2 wires which you won't use anymore, IIRC these are both V+.
And a few mechanical upgrades between the years too! The newer transmissions have a mechanical diode instead of the weak one-way roller clutch, the case got beefed up, and (I think) the main control or case changed to improve lubrication.
If I was replacing a 4R, then 98+ would be the only ones I would go with.
I think this is the one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Automatic-4x4-4R70W-Transmission-1998-Ford-Explorer-Mercury-Mountaineer-NEW-OEM-/321272932918?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4acd5bea36&vxp=mtr
Thanks for the replies. That is the E-Bay listing, ArdWrknTrk, fits 98 Explorer with the 5.0L
I'm not much with rewiring, Dixie460, but I have heard there were good upgrades to the later 4R70W. A friend has now told me the 1995 ECU might not talk to the 98 transmission, as there were changes to that electrical system in 1996.
The pickup will not move when put in gear, Conanski. My son drove it in high school. The first transmission failed. We had Ford put in a reman, and he only drove it six months before it leaked fluid and quit moving. Ford would not warrentee replace the second transmission, so I let it set for five years, but would like to have it running again.
