Little Background: My parents bought a 2003 F-550 XLT with 8,000 miles on it the other day. The truck had belonged to someone who couldn't make payments so the bank repossesed it.
Anywho, we have it now, but the only key that came with the truck was one that was "smaller". By smaller I mean the black part of the key that usually holds the chip isn't big at all, so I am assuming there is no chip inside. This brings me to my problem.
When you take the key out of the ignition and open the door, the truck starts to beep as if the key (or lights) is still in the ignition (or on). I read in the manual that there is a fail-safe feature that doesn't allow you to lock your keys into the truck (If the key is in the truck, and you lock the doors the driver's side will open). That is exactly what is happening.
So, what can I do to either find the lost key or whatever it is that is causing the beeping to occur?
Lets bump this and see if one of the online tecks can help with this.
My thoughts are to make an appointment with a ford dealership taking what you have and the bill of sale with you. (so they can verify you are the owner) I hate making 2 trips to a dealership on lack of paperwork.
Is this a diesel? If so ask this question in the diesel area.

This will be interesting, considering the Super Duty does not use a PATS (chipped) key.
A little add on...
After reading the owners manual for the '03 F-550 about the smart locks, I am starting to think that somthing could be wrong with the ignition switch assembly. Because, somthing is making the computer think that the key is still in the ignition.

Is it possible that you have an aftermarket alarm system. Although my 06. 6.0 does not have an alarm, there is no chip in the key. My old Toyota pickup with 300,000 mile on it had a alrm on it when I bought it 200,000 miles ago & does the same thing that it sound like yours is doing, but because of the alarm..
yeah-do we gotta remote start-alarm, or anything else yer aware of?-can ya check the fuse box for moisture(generally found on the back side some green fur action)??
There is no remote start or alarm that we were notified of. I can check the fuse box after work today. The truck does have the hydraulic dump bed if that makes any difference?
The problem you are having is that the switch inside the ignition to tell it that the key is inserted is stuck or you have a chafed wire in there. It is telling the truck that there is a key in there even though you took it out. It thinks that the key is in and is therefore unlocking your door. you can try spraying some contact cleaner in there and then pulling the key in and out. If that doesnt work, you may need to replace the key switch. There is no PATS system and if there was an aftermarket alarm there would probably be some tell tale sign of it. Have you tried locking the door with the key after you get out? Not sure, but that may work.. I know if you have the door keypad that you can lock the truck with the keys in it, if you use the pad.
