Have a new to me 2005 Ex but got only one key and fob.
How about this idea - get a regular (non PATS) key cut that will turn the ignition an open the door. Bury the original key in the steering column so the RF is always there. The truck will think the right key is in the ignition and will start with the regular key.
Any problem with copying a PATS key to a regular key? Any risk of damaging chip in the PATS key on the key cutting machine? I know there is a regular key with same shape available.
Yes I know that the security is compromised but how will the experienced car thief know that? They will know that newer vehicles all have PATS and won't try.
Regular key is what $5 cut? As opposed to $100 or so for another PATS including programming at the dealer?
That will work fine. Any car with a remote starter is setup the same way. Thiefs know about that, but no remote start they will assume its secured by the pats system. WHich is a fairly descent setup. Ask any shop about a remote start installation, they will tell you you need to give up a key. All they do is put it in a lil box in the column or near it.
If your truck came with PATS and you bypass it, your insurance company is not responsible to pay out if it gets stolen.
When I was looking at cars years ago, my insurance agent told me that when I was talking about remote starters. I don't know if that is Wisconsin only or a general policy loophole.
His logic was that the insurance rate I pay was based on a vehicle with a factory theft deterrent system. A vehicle without a factory theft deterrent system would cost me more to insure.

No problem cutting the new key. I just had a new PATS key cut from an existing one at the local hardware store and both work fine (I had 2 existing keys on hand to program the 3rd).
FYI - you don't need any existing FOBs to program new ones, but you probably already knew that. You just need to have all FOBs that you want to work with the truck on hand when you do the programming.
Does anyone know which are the best Ebay sources for keys and fobs.. I asked a couple of locksmiths the other day and they were $35 and $55 for keys and the Ford Stealer wanted $75 just for the key w/o cutting...

I just bought a key from transponderisland for $9.99 and two FOBs from carandtruckremotes for $19.99. Both provided good products and fast shipping.

Any good 12v shop will install a bypass kit rather than putting the key/key head in the column. There are bypass boxes that you install and connect it to the remote start so that the bypass is only active when the remote start system is attempting to start the truck. This is the best way to bypass the system as it does not affect the functionality of the system other than during a commanded remote start.

It's not available for all applications, but you can get them for a wide variety. It still works the same way though, trigger the bypass and use a non-transponder key to drive the vehicle away.
In my tuner, I have an option to disable PATS. If your serious about disabling it, you may want to look at doing in the computer. The advantage of using a bypass is, it only activates when the remote start is activated. For what your describing, it will be active at all times or atleast any time the key is powering Ignition 1.
