Tie down hooks

New, 2007 Crew, short bed.

Any recommendations for cap rail tie downs? I like the look of the ones that retract. Is a particular brand or style stronger? Load limit from Ford? Thanks!

John

I recently installed the Slide-n-Lock rails in the bed of my 05 F350 and think they're great. They're easy to cut to size and I bought the black rails so they look good. The only recommendation is that you pick up a couple of extra locking pins at the same time. I have a short bed and the extra rail from the 93 inch long rails were used on the sides of my utility trailer.

I bought them from American Van:

Great service - I had them in 2 days.

Nice! What kind of load can you put on them (pounds)?

1000 pounds it says...huh? The bed side couldn't take that...I guess their point is the tie down will.

I bolted in a couple of big eye bolts in the middle stake pockets, on the inside of the bed. I had to drill a hole through the bed liner, and I used some BIG washers on both sides to make it a little more sturdy.

I got a couple of big caribiners and hooked them to the lower rear hook points. That way it's easier to hook up to.

I don't tie down HUGE loads with them, but they've been very useful. I've done this on several trucks now, and it's all been surprisingly stable.

The rails themselves are fairly thick aluminum extrusions and they attach to the inner lip of the bed rail with a 1/4 inch stainless steel screw and nylon locknut every 5 inches. The lip of the bed rail is a double thickness of metal at this point and due to the thickness and stiffness of the aluminum rail it tends to distribute the load over a larger area. Even when I crank down on the ratchet strap I don't see any real deflection of the bed lip. So far I'm pretty happy with them. I particularly like the ability to position the tie down ring where I need it along the rail.

I like the beaner idea! Yeah, I just need some tie down points that are higher than the stock ones- I tried to tie down a simple 5 gal gas can and it wasn't going to happen very well with only the stockers.
