351W Throttle Body Question

My mechanic tells me that there is no longer any source for a new throttle body for my '89 F150 Supercab (351W). Is this true?

Is there an alternative?

My truck starts, but acts like the fuel or the air or both get choked-off when I try to accelerate from a stop. It often dies as a result, and sometimes after I get it started again, it won't move without dying and being started several times. He says, "worn throttle body." I don't doubt this -- I just wonder, now that I am told that there are no new throttle bodies to be had (and used ones are just as likely to be worn) what my alternatives are?

I am obviously not a machanic. Thanks for your patience in reading my post, and (in advance) for responding.

I have never heard of a throttle body wearing out, but that doesn't mean much. I would try pulling codes and see what comes up....look here for details http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13

That problem could be caused by a lot of things, TPS, IAC, gunk buildup, clogged fuel filter, bad FPR.

When was the last tune up done? Plugs/wires/cap/rotor....might be time for one of those

Thanks, nighthawk285. My mechanic (who tuned it up a couple of months ago) tells me that he has gone through this routine.

What I am really fishing for is some strategy for improving the engine's performance that would entail replacing the factory throttle body with something else. I just don't know what that thing would be.

You could get a larger bore TB if you were wanting to go for a more performance kind of thing, but I dont see how the factory TB would kill your engine. Does it do it when its in park or neutral too?

Nope. Only when I put it in gear. When it dies, and I start it up again, it often stutters, but usually doesn't die. I often have to rev it some to sort of get it running strong again before putting it back in gear, but that doesn't always help. In fact, I can't tell you if that really helps. It just makes me feel better to step on the gas and make the engine rev after it's killed itself.

I guess a larger bore TB would cause it to consume for fuel, too, wouldn't it?

Well if it was the TB, then it shouldnt make any difference whether its in gear or not. Any oil in the airbox? Is there good Fuel Pressure? It seems that something like this should at least throw one or two codes.

A larger TB on a stock engine won't do much except lean out your fuel mixture and take away a bit of your torque.

Makes me wonder if he missed that sticker on the side that sez "do not clean throttle body" when he tuned it up.

Check you codes as outlined above & get back to us. I would suspect something else as well rather than a TB, but I'm not the guy under the hood. You might try one of our sponsors like Direct Ford Parts or Y2K. There has got to be a NOS Motorcraft TB out there somewhere if you need one.
