Cool 337 CI Flatty

Having a problem, she starts and runs well, but when you shut her down, she does not want to start again, like the battery is dead but it isn't. Wait 10 minutes and she is good to go agaim. Any ideas? Thanks..Badmann

Snowking, Would flooding keep the motor from turning over? I still have 6.18 volts in the battery but she does not want to turn over.Wait the time it takes to slam a beer and she turns over and fires right up.

The starters on "regular" flatties are built with tight clearance between the armature and stator coils. Sometimes so close that they rub or lock to each other. It is common to turn the armature down 50 thousandths to improve cranking speed. So yours may be marginal cold, but locking up hot. The bushings could also be dry and locking up. So I would start by pulling the starter and checking it thoroughly.

The only other thing it could be is the starter solenoid. A pair of pliers across the terminals will show if that is the cause (do it carefully)

Be very sure that it`s not in gear, I had a few close calls when I thought it wasn`t in gear and it was.

After checking the starter if it still wants to act up, try changing out the coil.

ALBUQ F-1 I think has the problem figured out. I have the same problem with my F-2. The bushings wear out and the amature ***** in the case a little, just enough so when the engine gets hot the amature expands and grounds out. I decided I had to fix my starter after I cranked it over so long I got the starter hot enough to melt the soldier from stud connected to the fields of the starter.

The first thing to do before tearing the starter apart is make sure your cable going between the solenoid and started has clean ends and the studs on both are in good condition but I would place my bet on the starter bushings, it's alway the most difficult problem.
