292 distributor

I have a question? I have seen these duraspark conversions on the 292 distributors that take all the guts out of a 302 distributor and put them into the 292 distributor. Now my question is, are the distributor bodies different sizes? I mean, why cant you just pull out the 292 distributor and drop in the 302 distributor(cam gear swap if nessasary). Are they different lengthes?

I have been thinking/ looking into this as well. Search in the y block section as i was asking the same thing. I believe the actual housing and shaft are totally different on a 302 to a y block. So what I have been told is pretty much what you said. But i Have heard that you need to get like a 63 or 64 dizzy cause they changed the design a little and it uses an o ring to seal it with. (should be able to get rebuilt at napa advance auto etc) then take the guts out of a duraspark dizzy and the points guts out of a y dizzy and then you can get a duraspark Y dizzy. I have read that all the later ford dizzys inside are the same so it would not have to be a 302 dizzy if that was true(upper shafts could be differet see the web site below). I found that info on the web that talked of doing the duraspark swap to other motors like a 302 that may have had points that would allow you to have a orginal point dizzy with the duraspark guts. Also the duraspark II wiring is esently a 2 wire hookup. I have been tempted to try it but i dont know if i want it in my 54. hope this helps. for the wiring hookup look on line. here is the web site that i was talking about that talks about the dura dizzys. If you do the swap do a wright up for the site. http://home.cfl.rr.com/fatrichard/duraspark/eec.htmbest of luck and keep us updated if you do it

ok.so let me get this straight on the 302 gutz transplantation. you take the cap adapter off, then use a puller to pull the reluctor off the shaft ahousing, and then take the plate off that the pickup is screwed too and the only thing that is reused of the 292 distributor is the housing, mechacnical advance, and the shaft? right? I just picked up a ford v-8 distributor today for 10 bucks.

i have not tryed this yet. Look at the web site i put the link too. I think there is a sleave. take the adaptor off. Take the reulctor off. then i think there may be a roll pin and then take the plate off. then do it in reverse. Like i said I have not tryed to do this but i would think it would work. hopefully someone can tell you more about the dizzys. best of luck
