The V10 does great towing my 5th ....9,200lbs. I had to switch from the 3.73 to 4.30 gears. Has the HP and TQ to pull it over the sierras at 8,000 ft. I saved 6K not buying the SD 6.0. and the oil changes are a lot cheaper too....!
Yes, please do. Do you hand calculate it? The reason I ask is I was seeing consistently poor mileage and after putting a canopy on my truck the mileage went down another .5mpg or so. I was frustrated at 9.7 or so mpg so I started hand calculating it and realized when the computer said 9.7 I was in fact getting 11.1; so, more than 10% better than the computer said. However, when the computer said I got 12.2 mpg, it was dead on accurate. I don't know why the computer can be that far off sometimes and not others, but I've come to realize I can't assume because the computer is dead on accurate to a 10th of a mpg sometimes that it's not off by at least 10% other times.
I don't use the truck's computer for gas mileage, unless I want to get a good chuckle and hit reset while coasting down a hill. Nothing like seeing 42mpg! It is great for distance-to-empty, but that's it.
I use Ownersite.com. I started with the first tank, at fourteen miles on the clock. I input each and every tank fill-up: Date, mileage, cost and amount of fuel.
On my 2006 SD, for example, Ownersite shows that I have used 940.267 gallons over 55 fill-ups at a cost $2253.81, with an overall mpg of 10.89. My low mpg was 7.72, my highest has been 12.98mpg. My last fill-up on 13 March has not yet been used so it cannot be used to calculate mpg.
